If you are a user of db4o, and you have a blog, you should be aware that this company searches high and wide for mention of their product on the web, and they provide links on their developer forum. Each time I mentioned db40 in the last month, I noticed that traffic was being driven to my site from the db4o developer forum.
It so happens that I first wrote about db4o because the topic just came up, but when I noticed some extra traffic, I decided to see what would happen if I mentioned the product again. To my surprise, db40 provided a link to this entry as well. Then I wrote a piece with a tongue-in-cheek title called Let’s Fire The DBAs, and I continue to get readers coming from the db4o site. In fact, db4o gave my piece a five star rating, which was kind.
There has been a fuss lately about people being paid to blog, or receiving incentives. That is NOT how the web works. Community is built by companies like db40. They recognize and reward the mention of their product, but, more importantly, they seem to be listening. db40 has helped me by promoting my blog because I promoted their product. That is how it is done!
I am also impressed by the fact that my traffic continues at a higher rate. The entries that tend to get readers are the entries about database technologies, and I am convinced that these are readers who are returning after having come from the db4o developers forum.
Rest assured that, if you write about your experience with db40, somebody is going to read what you wrote. This is a case study on blogging for fun and profit. I recently added Google adsense to my blog to help pay for my server. I am thinking about traffic in a whole new way.
